Once a powerhouse in the aquatic world; the Bauxite Mining town of Linden in an effort to return to those glory days will be entertaining the best swimmers in the land this Sunday.
President of the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association Alex Graham has indicated that the Himara Aquatic Club, which has been recently resuscitated and reinstated as a bonafide member of the national body, will be hosting the Meet.
Graham, who took over the GASA Presidency as of January 1, 2011 said that Himara’s return is in keeping with one of the Associations key objectives during the first quarter which is the reviving of existing groups and to seek new membership across Guyana. “We felt that strengthening and expanding GASA’s membership was a good place to start as we seek to further develop and promote amateur swimming in Guyana which serves as a catalyst for advancing the sport at all levels nationally.”
Apart from Sunday’s swimming competition, there will also be a fund raiser to support the club’s activities.
Graham commented: “We are really using this as a test case for how we can support new clubs going forward. We chose to start here {Linden} because of the new talent that they have as demonstrated in the Ministry of Education/Guyana Teachers Union championships last year.”
