Dear Editor,
I refer to SN February 15, 2011, “Dog breeder dies after North Ruimveldt shooting”, is a pitiful trade that should be illegal for a country with a growing population problem of street dogs that continue to reproduce.
People who profit off of breeding dogs with tactical breeding methods and having puppies born out of excessive pregnancies for the purpose of selling to earn a living is downright unconscionable.
The Guyana puppy mills operated under bottom houses, yards and enclosures are increasing the street population. The loyal common breed who faithfully served, are strayed by owners to accommodate the likes of small breed fancies and special breed with emphasis on the pit bull.
Some owners of pit bulls may wager them in the bloody underground dog fighting circle to applause and cheers entertained by these creatures that are bred to viciously destroy each other. I shall hope the stakes is a handful of sins and not money.
With North America’s puppy mills illegally operated by insensitive humans, it is oftentimes exposed by way of informants and investigated by law enforcements. It reveals appalling conditions that puppies endure in the interim of sale which outraged animal rights activists consider as cruelty.
Fortunately, the perpetrators are brought to justice, severe penalties imposed and all puppies seized are handed over to several animal shelters for adoption. Sadly for these little creatures in Guyana, no similar salvation awaits them.
We should observe with empathy their daily struggle dodging in and out of heavy traffic where many are hit and left to die on roadways. Sadly, I have seen dozens of dead dogs all across our roadways yet we need to encourage people to breed puppies with no humane thoughtfulness for the animals’ welfare.
The breeding of puppies could produce many unwanted ones that could eventually end up on the streets to a fate of constant reproducing and a cycle of a terrible street life. Have a conscience people, puppies are not stuff toys, but living mortals who should not be branded and sold by dog breeders for easy profits. To earn a living this way using defenceless and voiceless animals is to desecrate their innocence.
I shall hope that divine intervention will overrule peoples’ insensitive attitude to show the way of heart for animals.
To prevent unwanted puppies oftentimes dumped on the streets, make the right choice of spaying and neutering your dogs to prevent reproducing. Helping to limit the over population on our streets will spare many from a horrible life.
