Police have detained the son of a senior regional official and another man as they step up investigations into last Thursday’s multimillion-dollar robbery at the Regional Democratic Council office at Linden.
Kaieteur News understands that the official’s son was taken into custody shortly after detectives found a welder’s mask at a house he frequented.
A source said that detectives have also impounded a vehicle that they believe the bandits used to transport the loot.
Police officials said that all leads suggest that the perpetrators had inside knowledge about the operations at the RDC office.
“When they (the bandits) accosted the security guard they asked for a specific set of keys…they knew which safe they were going to,” an official said.
The robbers escaped with $5.4M in cash and a number of cheques after torching a safe in the RDC office.
According to Regional Chairman, Mortimer Mingo, the guard alleged that one of the robbers held him at gunpoint and relieved him of the keys to the building.
The man’s accomplices then reportedly entered the accounts department, and with the aid of a welding torch, gained access to the council’s safe, and escaped with the cash, and about $3 million in cheques. Unconfirmed reports indicate that the torch was the same one that was stolen from the RDC some months ago.
Reports are that the money included the entire payroll for RDC employees in Sub-Region two, Kwakwani/Berbice.
E and F Division Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police, David Ramnarine, told Kaieteur News that investigators have some information about who the perpetrators might be and are questioning several employees to get further leads.
