Kaieteur Sport Journalist Michael Benjamin was among the first set of recipients of commendation plaques awarded by the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) which held a ceremony to recognise the input of various stakeholders who consistently help to promote, cover and assist in the development of the sport.
The ceremony which was held at the Georgetown Club on Camp Street on Friday evening also saw in attendance Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony, Director of Sport Neil Kumar, former world champion Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis, current WIBA champion Shondell ‘the Mystery Lady’ Alfred, boxing promoter Keith Bazilio, GBBC President Peter Abdool and a number of boxing enthusiasts.
Benjamin, a former Continental of Americas Welterweight champion, was bestowed with honour for his sterling contribution towards the sport in the field of journalism.
He is a consistent fixture on the Friday Night Fights initiative serving as a broadcaster and is also involved in many other related functions to the development of the sport.
Equipped with a wealth of experience both inside and outside the ring, Benjamin has served the sport with distinction, having served in an administrative capacity in the past.
According to many, this knowledgeable journalist is deserving of the honour and the entire Kaieteur News and more directly his colleagues in the Sports Department would like to extend congratulations to this humble servant of the nation.
Among the other persons to receive commendations were Dr. Anthony, Director of Sport Neil Kumar, Lewis and Alfred.
