Ray Sandiford, the boxer representing the Guyana Police Force that was cited for blatant indiscipline during his junior/welterweight bout against Stephon Gouveia in the January edition of the ProAm boxing cards was slapped with an eighteen month suspension from all activities organized by the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) after a five member disciplinary committee deliberated on the matter Thursday evening last.
Kevin Allicock, who also displayed unsportsmanlike behaviour in a previous edition of the said forum, was placed on a six weeks suspension, a six months bond and a strong reprimand to keep the peace during that time or face sterner action. The clock started ticking Friday afternoon.
Sandiford’s incident occurred during the January edition of the ProAm cards and follows closely on the heels of a similar incident at the CAC Games in Puerto Rico when he was slapped with a four months ban for acts of indiscipline.
This time around, the representative of the Guyana Police Force displayed gross misconduct after he dropped a points decision to Stephon Gouveia. He refused to accept the verdict claiming that he had been ‘done in.’ He further refused to shake his opponent’s hands, a prerequisite in keeping with the true spirit of the sport.
Further, Sandiford arrogantly refused to accept the reward of one large food hamper put up by furniture giants, Courts, opting to leave the gift on a nearby table before stalking off in a rage.
To make matters worse he was verbally abusive to boxing officials and representatives of the sponsors who attempted to pacify the issue. Sandiford also refused to attend the disciplinary hearing despite receiving correspondence to this effect.
Allicock displayed commendable penitence after he was found guilty of acts that could bring the sport in disrepute. Members of the
disciplinary committee took this into consideration when meting out punishment to the young pugilist.
Meanwhile, in brief remarks at the conclusion of the hearing GABA President Steve Ninvalle expressed remorse at having to mete out such measures to the boxers. “It pains me whenever I have to preside over issues of this nature but a line must be drawn where discipline is concerned,” he said.
Mr. Ninvalle further stated that the penalties were meted out in an effort to retain order and discipline among the affiliates.
“We must have deterring factors in place so that our boxers understand the need for discipline,” he said. “If we turn a blind eye to these matters when the boxers are at home we may very well be opening the floodgates for similar behaviour when they travel overseas,” Ninvalle concluded. He said he hoped that the punishment served as a warning to others nurturing similar ideas.
Ever since Ninvalle’s ascension to the helm of GABA, several boxers have been summoned before disciplinary committees and received varying punishments.
Dennis Thomas received a suspension after refusing to appear for a bout without reasonable excuse, while Orlando Allicock was also punished for unsportsmanlike behaviour. Stephan Gouveia received a short ban for indiscipline while Nankumar Singh was strongly reprimanded for showing dissent after one of his bouts last year.
