President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), Steve Ninvalle will travel to the West Coast Demerara this morning where he will deliver short remarks before declaring the U-16 and Junior Boxers Championships open.
The competition is slated to get underway at 12:00hrs, just after the completion of the weigh in and draw between 09:00hrs-1100hrs at the Anderson Sports Complex, Goed Fortuin WCD.
Boxers will be drawn from the various gyms in Georgetown, Berbice, Essequibo, North West and from the host region in a card that would also serve as a competitive introduction to the fistic sport for boxers of the host region that have only just undergone rigid training sessions under the tutelage of national coach, Wensel Thomas. In an earlier interview, Mr. Thomas had said that he was satisfied with the results of a training session coordinated by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and conducted by him where the youngsters where tutored in the basic skills required for combat.
Mr. Thomas has intimated that he had introduced the boxers to the basic concepts and from all indications they have grasped the fundamentals of the lesson.
He pointed out that he was on the lookout for talent from among the females but only one such person from the Wales community has demonstrated an interest so far. The action this morning would assist the coach in determining how receptive the youngsters had been to the lessons imparted.
The weigh-in takes place between 09:00hrs-1100hrs while the action gets underway at 12:00hrs sharp. Following the conclusion of the bouts Mr. Thomas returns to the region to continue the developmental programme.
