100 attend Lion’s Club annual senior citizen party
As voluntary organisations continue to improve the lives of the less fortunate in society and bring smiles to the faces of citizens throughout Guyana, the D’Urban Park Lions’ Club yesterday treated 100 senior citizens as part of its annual senior citizens’ entertainment party.
The venue was the auditorium of the Marian Academy School.
Chairperson for the Health and Service Committee of the club, Sarah Gordon, told Kaieteur News that this event has been ongoing for the past 12 years. She said that it was usually held during the Christmas season, right up to three years ago when the club decided that it would host the event during the early part of every year (Mashramani time), since many other organisations would host activities for senior citizens around the Christmas period.
Ms Gordon explained that the senior citizens were selected from the Uncle Eddie’s Home, Archers Home, Catholic Home on Vlissengen Road, and from churches such as St. Pius, St. Sidwell’s, the Holy Spirit Church and the Church of Transfiguration, all located in the community that surrounds D’Urban Park.
Each elderly person was provided with meals while being entertained by steelpan music and recorded songs.
The guests were also privy to a hamper that contained toilet paper, sugar, soap, milk, butter, vinegar, crackers, vitamins, cheese, a washrag, soap powder, a bottle of Malta and other condiments.
A section of the gathering at the Durban Park Lions’ Club senior citizens’ entertainment party, as some of the elderly literally “jumped into the mash mood” when some of the club members brought them out to the dance floor to “strut their stuff”.
