Route 32 minibus drivers deny “taking advantage of rising fuel prices”

Chairman of the route 32 minibus association, James Cowsil, and the former Chairman, Nizam Ali, visited Kaieteur News to “clear the air” over accusations that the route 32 minibus drivers were facing that plainly stated they were “taking advantage of fuel prices”.
He told this publication that in 2005, the minibus association was working along with a fare structure set out by the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce when the price of gasoline was $550 per gallon.
Kaieteur News was made aware that in 2008 when the fuel prices soared to a new high, the minibus associations throughout Guyana raised their fares much to the dismay of citizens who rely on public transportation.
Government decided to allow the associations to raise their fares but not to take advantage of the situation. The new fare structure was decided upon by both the minibus associations and the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce.
Soon after this new structure was implemented, Government was able to purchase fuel at a cheaper price and the minibus drivers lowered their fares, returning to the fare structure that they were working with in 2005.
Now the public is complaining that the route 32 minibuses have raised their fares, taking advantage of the rising fuel prices. Cowsil is contending that his association is “being empowered by the zone 32 minibus constitution to do some fare adjustment” in this situation where the price for gasoline has once more escalated (the constitution can be found at the Deed’s Registry).
This publication learnt that the route 32 minibus drivers are currently using the fare structure that was approved by the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce in 2008 because the price for fuel has now risen.
They would like the public to understand that they are authorized to do so by their constitution and that they are not “just plucking figures” since they are not unaware or ignorant of the fact that many Guyanese are suffering from the cost of living being so high.
The fares which the route 32 minibus drivers are using are in keeping with the fares agreed upon by the Ministry and the association in 2008.
