He was not a farm worker – Farm manager
An experiment is said to have led to the tragic demise of nine-year-old Richard Mohamed, called Rommel.
This newspaper previously reported that the lad hanged himself. He was said to be a worker on the farm where he lived. However, this is said to be inaccurate.
Ryan Chin, who identified himself as the Manager of the farm, yesterday said that the deceased was a jovial lad and had no apparent reason to commit suicide.
Chin explained that Rommel was very “experimental” which lends reason to previous mishaps that were viewed as suicidal attempts.
Chin cited an instant where the lad had a plastic bag over his head. He said that he took the bag from over his head and “it was an accident”. He pointed out another incident where Mohamed’s finger was stuck in a CD “he put his finger in the hole of the CD and it swell up big and get red, he could not get it out and I had to save he again, Rommel just like experiment,” Chin explained.
The man made it clear that “we are fully aware of child labour, and he was not a worker on the farm”. He said that the lad could not have had a chore to feed fowls since the farm has over 15,000 fowls and he would not have been able to execute such a tack. Further, Chin said that the lad was not alone on the farm; he said that the child’s mother, stepfather and another farm worker was on farm grounds.
He said that the child goes to school but did not go that day because his mother thought Valentine’s Day was a holiday. Mohamed was enrolled at the Light Town Primary School.
According to Chin, Mohamed’s fingers were found between his neck and the rope which lends to reason that he was trying to free himself from the rope.
Richard Mohamed was discovered by his stepfather hanging from the rafter of one of the pens. The farm is located in a community some 16 miles from New Amsterdam.
Police are investigating and statements have been taken from his parents and other close associates.
