A post mortem performed yesterday on the remains of Harbour Bridge victim Nalini De Agrella, called ‘Sally’, revealed that she died from asphyxiation caused by drowning. This was compounded by multiple blunt trauma.
The autopsy was performed by Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh.
The findings, and the fact that police have not sought to re-arrest her husband, seem to suggest that investigators are satisfied that the 40-year-old mother of five took her own life last Valentine’s Day.
But the motive for her act remains unclear and a police official said that the matter is still being investigated.
Leroy De Agrella, the woman’s husband, was detained shortly after reporting the incident. He was released on $50,000 station bail on Thursday.
Reports are that around 01:30 hours last Tuesday, Leroy De Agrella and his spouse left a night spot at Providence on the East Bank of Demerara.
They were reportedly heading to their La Grange, West Bank Demerara home when Nalini told her spouse that she wanted to urinate.
According to a relative, Mr. De Agrella told her to wait until they arrived home but his wife insisted that she needed to relieve herself.
Mr. De Agrella reportedly stopped on the Demerara Harbour Bridge so his wife could urinate, while he waited in his vehicle.
He later told relatives that while he was waiting, a car stopped alongside his and the driver enquired as to why he had stopped on the bridge.
When he explained that he was waiting on his wife, the driver told him that Nalini was attempting to jump overboard.
De Agrella then jumped in the water to rescue his wife but was unable to save her. He reportedly injured himself in the process.
Fortunately, he was rescued by Harbour Bridge staffers and treated at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre before being detained by police.
Nalini’s body was fished out of the Demerara River some eight hours later in the vicinity of Meadow Bank.
Yesterday, relatives continued to insist that they still had no idea why the woman would have taken her own life.
One relative told this newspaper that the woman was in high spirits all day as her husband presented her with a diamond bracelet and a watch for Valentine’s Day.
The relative refuted reports that the couple had argued shortly before Nalini allegedly jumped to her death.
