Some 40 workers of the Berbice Bridge are expected to get a five percent pay increase for last year along with several other benefits including leave and allowances, in keeping with an agreement between the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union and management.
The one-year agreement was signed by representatives of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union and the Berbice Bridge yesterday.
According to the union, some of the 30 clauses contained in the agreement were approved by both parties include payment for Sundays and public holidays, promotion, meal allowances, acting allowances, standby allowance, annual Leave, leave passage assistance, sick leave and maternity leave among others.
The union is expected to meet with BBCI some time later in the year to begin talks for a wage hike for 2011.
The meeting is also expected to cover any adjustment or addition to the fringe benefits of the agreement.
This agreement was signed by Charles Ogle on behalf of the Chief Labour Officer. Omadatt Samaroo signed on behalf of BBCI, and Komal Chand, Seepaul Narine, Harridial Ramdihal, Totaram Sooknaan and Sameer Ally, on behalf of the Union.
The union and the company, on appending the agreement expressed interest in the well-being of the workers and the development of the company to the mutual advantage of both groups.
It was noted that there is a need for a respected partnership between the union and the workers on one hand and the Company on the other.
In August 2009 most of the employees of the Bridge sought the approval for the Union to become their representative body.
On September 10, 2009 the Union forwarded its application, supported by two-thirds of the Bridge employees, to the Trade Union Recognition and Certification Board seeking to be certified as the employees’ bargaining agent.
The Certification Board’s approval was granted on November 30, 2009 but the Management of the Bridge delayed for over four months to have the Recognition Agreement in place.
