Berbicians are expected to turn out in their numbers at the All Saints Scott Church Ground at Princess Elizabeth and Vryheid Road in New Amsterdam this evening from 18:00 hrs.
The occasion is the 5th Annual Orland ‘Pocket Rocket’ Boxing Gym Inter Gym competition. The competition this year is being organized by Rogers and former national multi-weight Amateur and pro Boxing champion Jeff Roberts.
Most of the top amateur boxers in the country are expected to descend at the venue to be a part of the action. The one night event will see Boxers drawn from a number of Gyms in the country including five from Berbice namely the Central New Amsterdam Boxing Gym, Rose Hall Bombers and Jammers, the newly formed Lion Heart Boxing Gym and Host ‘Pocket Rocket’ from Rose Hall.
A number of boxers are also expected from gyms in Georgetown and other parts of the country including The Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Harpy Eagle, Forgotten Youth Foundation and Timehri Warriors among other entities matching punches with the Berbice posse.
According to reports reaching Kaieteur News, the ancient county has put together a power pack line up to defend their turf including Jamal Eastman, Joel and Richard Williamson, Kelsie George as well as Bowtar ‘Canje Bad Man’ Seeraj and Riaz ‘The Real Coolie Bully’ and Female fighter Rena David, all representing the Pocket Rocket Gym.
The other gyms have not released the names of their fighters preferring to keep their cards close to their chest.
There over 20 bouts are listed and will see competition in the various categories including bouts for U-15, Just Starters, and seniors, among others. The night’s event will be conducted under the rules of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA).
According to Rogers and Roberts, the Berbice boxers are well prepared and will be going all out to defend their turf. They touted that the encounters will take on a Berbice versus Georgetown affair and will renew the rivalry between the two counties. The ‘Rocket’ feels that his Gym alone is capable to take them all out.
Roberts and Rogers in an earlier interview with this newspaper had stated that several coaches were working along with the boxers at the various gyms.
They had said that the main aim of the team is to create gainful activity for the boxers so as to keep them gainfully occupied.
The formers boxers had pointed to the many activities organized with the development of the youngsters in mind including literacy classes. Among the coaches working with the boxers in Berbice is former Guyana national Light heavyweight Boxing Champion Al Thomas, the only Guyanese to have sparred with former world heavyweight boxing great Mohammed Ali.
The club is hoping to hold a boxing competition at least four times a year.
They are appealing to corporate Guyana for assistance and support for the boxers. The organizers are grateful for the assistance received from Gordon’s Boutique and Stationery, Candy Shop in Pitt Street, RVC Private School, Mike’s Beverage, Republic Bank, New Building Society, Ansa McAl and A. Ally and Sons.
