– NACAC Cross Country team go on show today
By Edison Jefford
Continuing to pioneer its corporate support for sports in Guyana, Digicel handed over a pair of handsets (phones) to Region Nine’s national distance athletes, Doretta Wilson and Hezron Pedro ahead of their international debut in Trinidad today.
Digicel Guyana made a simple contribution to the two athletes upon their arrival in Georgetown Thursday afternoon from Lethem where the hinterland-based duo joined the rest of the national team before they departed Guyana yesterday morning.
Additionally, Wartsila ensured that Pedro was equipped with a new distance running sneakers at the North America, Central American and the Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Country Race, which gets underway in Trinidad today at the Queens Park Savannah.
Prior to those two contributions, G. Bovell Construction Company had also chipped in to equip Wilson with a sneaker as well. The two athletes are expected to benefit from more stakeholder support following Kaieteur Sport’s exposure of their situations.
Before the athletes were given sneakers to compete in, they ran bare-feet. Apart from that, their competition apparel and gear were sub-standard.
This newspaper had called on interested parties to seriously address those issues facing the talented athletes.
Those efforts are now bearing fruit with institutions such as the Athletics Association of Guyana, Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, National Sports Commission, and Hinterland Youth and Sports Development Association (HYSDA) lobbying for their support.
Today, in neighbouring Trinidad, the new-look athletes will be fully synchronised with the rest of the national team that Guyana Defence Force athlete, Wilbert Mingo will captain in an effort to ‘bring home the bacon’ in the overall team’s competition.
The two athletes will look to transpose their form from the National Schools’ Championship and the AAG Cross Country race to the international level.
The NACAC Cross Country Race usually attracts the best distance runners in each representative region.
Among Wilson and Pedro, Upper Demerara’s national junior distance athlete, Nathanie Giddings will join them at the junior level.
Giddings is on his second international assignment after his deserved debut last year at the second leg of the South American 10k in Suriname.
Giddings had basically selected himself for the Suriname tour after he led stage one of the race in Guyana for a little over seven kilometres.
The three junior distance athletes currently in Trinidad are undoubtedly among Guyana’s best after strong performances.
Their chances at the NACAC race should be good. Looking at the senior athletes on the tour, the ‘Little Kenyan’ as Cleveland Forde has been dubbed will be in the forefront for Guyana.
Forde is the country’s trump card in placing among the top three in the race.
Forde brings his dominance from the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) three-stage South American 10km race to the event today. He, however, admitted that he is not at his best form this early in the season when he spoke briefly with this newspaper.
Forde said that while he will be giving every ounce of effort in the race, he noticed that he was a bit heavier than before during his preparation.
He said the feeling worried him but he is confident that he will get his mind to the right place today for the NACAC race.
His support will come from Dennis Horatio, who has transitioned well from a national junior to a senior athlete. Horatio has shown steady consistency; he, like Cleveland Thomas, is rewarded for his steady progression. Today is really the ultimate test for them.
