It is nearing two months since veteran journalist Clem David passed away, at his 83 BB Eccles, East Bank Demerara home, causing the local media fraternity to reflect on a career spanning several decades.
However there have been some reports that did not accurately represent the final hours of the notable personality. At least this is according to the man’s reputed wife of 20 years, Charmaine Thomas.
Thomas who produced a telephone printout and other documents on the drama that unfolded on the night of David’s passing, refuted claims that the man died alone at his home and was discovered by family members at 23:00 hours.
According to the woman she had arrived at the house she shared with David around 21:00 hours and observed him experiencing what she described as a seizure. She said that she proceeded to summon his doctor. She revealed that “Clem was suffering from hypertension since 2002 and had an enlarged heart which was resting on his lungs.”
The woman explained that after it was discovered that local medical institutions could do nothing more for the man’s condition, efforts were made to seek medical attention in Barbados.
“We went to Barbados to one of the most reputable medical practitioners who did all of Clem’s examinations. My friend had also made a booking to bring two medical doctors from the United States to our residence to check on him but they found that no surgery could have been done…He just could have used medication.”
Two days prior to his death, David was examined by his doctor, Dr Clement McEwan, at the Davis Memorial Hospital and his pressure and everything else was normal, Thomas asserted.
On the day of the death, she said, she summoned the same doctor who was however attending to patients at the hospital.
Another doctor and two male nurses were rushed to David’s home in an ambulance, Thomas recounted. “By the time they reached there, which was approximately around 10 pm (22:00 hours), his heart had already failed…he had died.”
“I was the one that called the doctor; I was the one that was there when he died; I was the person who called his relatives to let them know what was going on. I don’t know what happened to cause people to misrepresent what really happened…I was with him from the time he started ailing right to the end,” Thomas insisted yesterday.
