Conrad Wright, 50, was yesterday allowed bail in the sum of $250,000 by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry after he was slapped with nine counts of uttering counterfeit US currency and nine counts of possession of forged US currency.
To the charges he pleaded not guilty.
The accused is being represented by defense counsel Patrice Henry.
According to police prosecutor, Sergeant Lionel Harvey, the accused committed the unlawful act between December 10, 2010 and January 17, 2011 at Grove, East Bank Demerara.
The prosecutor further added that on the days of the incident, Wright uttered to Leila Hilliman a quantity of US dollars knowing same to be bogus.
Also on the dates mentioned, the accused had in his possession a quantity of forged US currency.
Lawyer Patrice Henry told the court in his bail application that the circumstances out of which the charges arise were “suspicious”. Henry explained that the accused never uttered counterfeit US currency, nor did he have such bogus currency in his possession.
With that being said, the lawyer requested that his client be admitted to bail in a reasonable sum.
Harvey in responding to the counsel’s submission told the court that the prosecution has no objection to granting Wright his pre-trial liberty, but requested that bail be granted in a substantial amount.
