The first activity for the new executive of the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation is tomorrow’s Novice and Junior Championships set for the Skeldon Secondary School, Corentyne Berbice.
This is the first time that the Ancient County will be experiencing first hand, a National Powerlifting competition and according to re-elected President of the GAPF Peter Green, this move is in the interest of decentralizing the sport. Body Building competitions have also been held in Berbice and recently, the Guyana Table Tennis Association under President Henry Green DSM has also been following a similar path.
But tomorrow, the strongest men in the land will be going head to head as they showcase their natural talent in the first instance for the top spots in the various categories and bragging rights and also to gain the selectors nod to represent Guyana at the 5th Annual Caribbean Championships set for next month in the Cayman Islands.
The sport has been growing leaps and bounds in the past three years and tomorrow’s Novice competition will see at least fifteen (15) newcomers gracing the stage at the Skeldon Secondary School.
According to reports emanating from Berbice, the hype is in the air and fans are expected to be out in their numbers to see the best novice and junior athletes in the sport vying for top honors in the Sub Junior (18 years & under), Junior (19 – 23 years) and Open (over 23) categories.
Eagerly anticipated is the head to head collision between Guyana’s two leading juniors; Anis Ade Thomas of Berbice (2010 Caribbean junior silver medalist) and Kenneth Melville (North American Regional junior silver medalist) who hails from the Cinderella County of Essequibo.
These two athletes have been excelling since their debut in the sport and fans can expect a keen duel between these two.
Guyana’s most acclaimed Powerlifter who is a Caribbean gold medalist, ‘Big’ John Edwards and National heavyweight champion Colin ‘Mr. Clean’ Chesney of Linden are also expected to be on show in exhibition mode. Both heavyweight athletes are also preparing for the Caribbean Championships.
Edwards is the current holder of the national squat record (771.75lbs/350.0kgs) while Chesney’s best official attempt which was achieved at last year’s seniors is 744.18lbs/337.5kgs.
The new Weight Categories that have been fixed by the International Powerlifting Federation which came into effect on January 1st, 2011 are:
Women – 43kgs (Sub junior and junior), 52kgs, 57kgs, 63kgs, 72kgs, 84, 84+kgs.
Men – 53kgs (Sub junior and junior), 59kgs, 66kgs, 74kgs, 83kgs, 93kgs, 105kgs, 120kgs, 120+kgs.
Meanwhile, admission to the venue will be free tomorrow with competition time set for 12:00hrs. The GAPF will be laying on transportation from the Linden bus park at 08:00hrs for athletes and ardent supporters who are in need.
