QC better last year’s performance at Barbados Relay Fair
Some members of the Queens College Athletics Team that competed in Barbados last week pose for Kaieteur Sport yesterday following their return to Guyana on Sunday.
One of Guyana’s premier secondary institutions, Queens College topped their 2010 performance at the Barbados Relay Fair when their Girls’ Team finished ninth of 31 schools while their Boys’ Team was sixth of 36 schools overall in the annual competition.
The performance of the QC team in the competition this year was better than last year when the Girls’ team was 15th of 30 competing teams and the Boys’ team was eighth of 32 teams. One of the officials from the touring team was overwhelmed with the result.
Team Manager, Candida Williams, told Kaieteur Sport that she was happy with the team’s effort given that the competition was somewhat different to what they were used to here. She said that fast times mattered more than first place finishes at the competition.
The school had left Guyana last Wednesday and returned on Sunday. Among the notable results for the team was Christopher Belfield’s gold medal in the U-15 Boys’ Shot Putt and Amil Alli’s bronze medal to clinch two medals in the same event.
The school’s male 4x100m U-20 relay team won silver while their girls’ 4x400m team won silver. They also got a bronze medal, among others, in the U-15 girls’ long jump event. Teachers, Godfrey Alexander and Nadia Hollingsworth had also accompanied the team.
