The body of Courtney Apple, the mechanic who was feared drowned, was yesterday morning recovered near Echarak Falls on the Potaro River.
Apple went missing last Monday following a boat accident in the vicinity.
Relatives disclosed that the 41 year-old had left the “Backdam” with a cousin and was heading to a community near the Kaieteur Falls when tragedy struck.
The man’s mother, Viola Apple, told Kaieteur News that she received word of the mishap on Monday and spoke with the cousin who was with Courtney Apple in the boat.
This newspaper understands that the man and his cousin were travelling in the boat when it hit some rocks and became badly damaged, almost splitting in two.
The cousin, Neil James, jumped into the river and beckoned Apple to do the same thing so they could swim to shore. James did recall Apple jumping into the river, but he never did surface.
The dead man’s mother said that he had worked for years in the interior mines as a mechanic.
She recounted that she last saw her son in January when she returned from overseas. Courtney Apple was not married and had no children.
Late yesterday afternoon the man’s remains were flown to the city. The body is currently at the Lyken Funeral Home awaiting a post mortem examination.
