Gunmen sometime before dawn yesterday torched a safe and escaped with $5.4 million in cash and a quantity of cheques from the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) office in Linden.
According to Regional Chairman Mortimer Mingo, the guard told officials of the RDC and police that he was held and subdued by an individual armed with a gun, who took away the keys to the building.
The man’s accomplices then reportedly entered the accounts department, and with the aid of a welding torch, gained access to the council’s safe, and escaped with the cash, and about $3 million in cheques. Unconfirmed reports indicate that the torch was the same one that was stolen from the RDC some months ago.
Reports are that the money included the entire payroll for RDC employees in Sub-region 2 Kwakwani/Berbice, whose salaries are not paid through the bank. Arrangements for paying these employees have subsequently been put on hold.
E and F Division Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police David Ramnarine, told Kaieteur News that investigators have some information about who the perpetrators might be and are questioning several employees to get further leads.
The Regional Democratic Council is urging anyone with information that could lead to the recovery of the funds to make contact with the nearest police station. The Regional Chairman also expressed regret for the inconvenience to the affected employees.
