– Eight schools to participate
The 3rd Annual Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond Secondary Schools Football Tournament was officially launched yesterday, during a simple ceremony which was attended by members of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), teachers and students of participating schools and the media, at the LEAP Head Office in Linden.
Representing the LOC were Mayfield Taylor-Trim, Wanda Richmond, James Craig and Rollin Tappin.
Taylor-Trim in her remarks gave a brief description of the late Richmond, who she said was an ardent all-round sportsman, but someone who had a passion for football from very young and a sport he would later go on to excel in.
She stated that it was his love for the sport which extended beyond the field later in his career that motivated the overseas chapter that provides sponsorship for the tournament to create the tournament in his memory.
The tournament which is set to officially commence on March 8 will be preceded by the Opening Ceremony slated for March 1 when defending champions Wisburg Secondary takes on an All-Star combination that comprises players chosen from the remaining seven schools.
The competition will have eight teams divided into two groups of four participating in a round-robin segment with the top two from each group moving onto the semi-final stages.
Craig speaking at the occasion disclosed that the Organisers are looking for a higher level of play this time and judging from the feedback received it certainly will produce that.
He said that all systems will be in place for the smooth running of the tournament which will be played at six venues two days per week (Tuesdays and Thursdays).
According to Craig, the semi-final stages will be played on a home and away basis with goal aggregate being the decisive factor of which two teams will make it to the final, while prizes for the top three finishers, Most Valuable Player and top performers will also receive trophies.
The winning school will have its name inscribed on the Lien Trophy and will have the opportunity to keep it for one year.
The schools in the competition are Group A-Wisburg Secondary, Linden School of Excellence, New Silver City Secondary and Harmony Secondary, while Group B will consist of- Christianburg/Wismar Secondary, Marcia Craig Educational Institute, Mackenzie High and Linden Foundation Secondary.
During the round-robin phase, play will start at 15:00hrs, while from the semi-final stage play will commence from 13:00 hrs.
The venues identified are Wisburg Secondary School ground, Linden Technical Institute ground, Bayroc Community Centre, Christianburg Community Centre, Linden Foundation Secondary School ground and Mackenzie Sports Club.
Meanwhile, all the schools that participated in the previous tournaments were presented with plaques to commemorate their commitment to the event.
