The budgetary allocation for current and capital works across Region Six was presented on Tuesday by the Region Six Chairman, Zulfikar Mustapha.
The $3,512, 741budet, nearly $300M more than the 2010 figure, will see the administration allocating various sums of monies to carry out its works programme for the year 2011.
In Land/Transport, $14.5M has been allocated to purchase a tractor and trailer for the Whim, Corentyne area. An ambulance will also be bought to complement the fleet at the New Amsterdam Hospital. There are also plans to purchase one for the Port Mourant Hospital.
Drainage and Irrigation (D&I) projects have attracted the allocation of $110M this year. According to the regional officials, new D&I structures will be constructed on the East Bank of Berbice, Black Bush Polder and on the Corentyne. A revetment at a cost of $15M will be constructed at the Amerindian reservation, Orealla, and the job of building such would be given to the residents, the Chairman said.
Building/Education will see works being done on several schools across the Region. Schepmoed Primary will have works totaling $5M; Canje Secondary, $16M and New Amsterdam Primary , $8M. Science Laboratories will be built at the Tutorial Academy Secondary School at a cost of $9M.
Berbice will have three new health centres this year. According to the regional budget, new health centres will be built at Whim; #53 Village, Corentyne and Angoy’s Avenue. Mustapha noted that currently health services at Whim and #53 are held at community centres but this will change once the clinic facilities would be opened.
These centres will be manned by doctors, the official said. He noted the rise in population along with the demand for more health services in those areas and credited those to the decision by government to build health centres there.
He also said that Government is going into the squatting area referred to as Angoy’s Avenue even though the area has not been regularised. This is because of the commitment by the administration, he said.
The New Haven Cooperative Society has the matter still pending in the court of law in Guyana regarding regularisation of the squatting settlement.
Fifteen sports grounds in Berbice will be rehabilitated with support from the Office of Empowerment. The Whim ground will be rehabilitated and the Kilcoy-Hampshire ground would be fenced. (Leon Suseran)
