Dear Editor,
Some Bible scholars say that the first incident of rudeness in the Holy Bible occurred when Cain asked God if he (Cain) was his brother’s (Abel) keeper. Cain was indeed rude to God as is evidenced in the book of Genesis when he asked God “Am I my brother’s keeper”?
The principle of being ones keepers is ex pounded upon in several books of the Bible, but I would like to refer to the book of John Chapter 13, verse 35 for one of the interpretations of what is really meant to be ‘thy brother’s keeper’.
In that verse Jesus Christ said “A new Command I give you; Love one another. As I love you, so you must love one another “.
In the secular world this love or being thy brother’s keeper can be demonstrated in many ways by many different groups of people, but in my opinion the group of people which best demonstrates what it really means to be thy brother’s keeper is ‘the police’.
They call it closing ranks. In other words, policemen and women at all levels usually protect each other in their right doings as well as their wrong doings.
Be that as it may, it is the protection of each other in the commission of wrongful deeds that attract the greatest of attention. Whenever a rank testifies against his comrade or refuses to act in collusion to commit a wrong it is because it is overbearing or there is no alternative. Many times they do so only to save themselves. As the saying goes, “save thyself and let your brother go astray”.
It must be noted that those who refuse to be their brother’s keeper in the police force can very well find themselves ostracized. It takes courage, bravery and a huge heart to break ranks and refuse to be thy brother’s keeper in sinful deeds. I dare say that such was the case as reported in the Kaieteur News of February 8th, 2011.
The caption of the article in that publication was, “Magistrate finds prosecutor lying to court”. The substance of the facts in the story that followed is that the prosecutor who was an Inspector lied that bail was offered to a defendant, but the lie was soon exposed by another rank who chose not to be the prosecutor’s keeper. For that he must be commended and emulated
What is most ironical is the fact that in every trial in a court of law the Prosecutor ensures that every witness takes an oath which in substance says “I promise to speak the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help me God”. My question is, how can a prosecutor more or less demand that a witness speaks the truth when he himself deliberately lies to the court? I am inclined to ask. What manner of man is that?
Too many innocent people may have suffered because too many lies may have been told against them, but I am happy to see that at least one rank had the courage to expose the wrong doing of his comrade. Perhaps he is aware of the scripture as laid down in the Book of John Chapter 8 verse 32 which says:
“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free”.
May he not suffer because of this and may all other ranks including the prosecutor in question, forever speak the truth. We now have to ask ourselves if this is the first time that that prosecutor has lied and if he will ever lie again. May God help us all as we truly endeavour to be our brothers’ righteous ways.
