– girl told him she was 19-years old
A 28-year-old East Coast Demerara man found out the hard way that looks are certainly deceiving when he found himself in hot water with a 14-year old girl from the Soesdyke/Linden Highway.
The man was arrested Tuesday night after police raided his house and found the teenager, who was missing from her parents’ home for a week.
In his defence though, the man claimed that the girl told him that she was 19 years old. In fact the teenager admitted that she did tell the man that she was 19.
But police at the Vigilance Police Station said that that would not be enough to exonerate the man.
This newspaper understands that the fourth form student of a secondary school on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway had left her home with a friend since last week Tuesday.
According to her friend, the teenager told her that she was friendly with the man who she chatted with frequently on the telephone.
The friend said that the man invited them to meet him in the city and they traveled from the highway and met him at the East Coast Demerara Bus Park. From there, the man took them to his mother’s home on the East Coast Demerara where he introduced the teenager as his fiancée.
He then took them to a house which he claimed was occupied only by himself.
The two girls spent a couple of hours there and the friend decided that it was time to go home. The friend said that the man accompanied them to catch a bus but instead of sending both girls home, he insisted that only the friend leave, which she did by joining a minibus to the city.
She then went home around 02:00 hours the following day. However she did not tell her parents exactly where she was or what had transpired.
Meanwhile, her friend’s parents became worried since the teenager did not return home but they had no idea who she had left the area with.
All the while the teenager who had returned home kept quiet and since she did not go to school, for the rest of the week she had no idea that her friend had still not returned home.
The parents of the missing child became desperate and they subsequently learnt that their daughter was last seen with her class friend.
On Tuesday they contacted the friend and she led them all the way up the East Coast Demerara.
Securing the services of the police, they went to the man’s house where they confronted him.
To his shock they told him that the girl who he had been keeping at his house for a week was just 14 years old.
The teen upon seeing her parents with the police proceeded to hide in a bedroom of the house and it was not until several minutes of persuasion that she emerged and spoke to her parents.
The man was arrested and taken to the Vigilance Police Station where he is being detained. Meanwhile, the teenaged girl was taken for a medical examination which confirmed that she was sexually molested.
