… to use 40% less geotextile fabric
Forty farmers were compensated as construction of the East Demerara Water Conservancy (EDWC) Northern Relief Channel continues, according to Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud.
And a review of the new design has revealed that the initial estimated quantity of geotextile fabric would be reduced by approximately 40 per cent, thus there will be some amount of savings.
The initial estimate of the geotextile fabric was $300 million. The bids ranged from $660 million and $334 million.
Yesterday, Minister Robert Persaud said that even though there were farmers who occupy land that belongs to the government, he still compensated them.
He said that an excess of $110 million was given by way of compensation.
They were also given time to harvest their crops that are presently growing. He added that upon completion of the canal it is not advisable that persons conduct farming activities along dams because it will be a negative action towards protecting the integrity of the dam.
To facilitate the construction of the canal the Minister said that seven pieces of equipment were bought — one bulldozer and six excavators.
Kaieteur News also understands a section of the alignment of the Relief Channel shows there is not full compatibility of the soil investigations and actual conditions encountered.
Regarding the mats for construction the Minister said timber was supplied and mats have been built.
Mr. Robert Persaud said that the canal will provide long-term security. He noted that when there is heavy rainfall in the future that area would not be flooded since the $3 billion canal, which would be 300 feet wide, and 10.3 km long is capable of storing much more of the excess water.
