The Foundation for Community Support (FOCUS) held its fourth Annual Spelling Bee Competition last Saturday at the South Sophia Pentecostal Holiness Church, located in ‘A’ Field, Sophia.
The Annual Spelling Bee was hosted in an ongoing partnership with both the South and North Sophia Pentecostal Holiness Churches. This year’s competition has been the largest to date and with the interest shown by the enthused children, the organisers are confident of its continued growth.
Three age groups competed, 7-9, 10-11 and 12-16. From a total of 17 competitors, there were three top place finishers in each age group. First place winners in the respective age groups were Makayla Gittens, Janesa Downer, and Monauta Frank.
Those placing second were Shelly Bowen, Aneesa Majeed, and Quasie Bowen. Third place finishers were Akeem Souvenir, Akeiza Yanksen, and Aliceia Adams.
All contestants displayed a true desire to be successful, by putting in the evident studies needed to make them worthwhile competitors. Trophies, medals and other prizes were distributed.
FOCUS has been working in the Sophia area for four years, concentrating particularly on childhood literacy with the formation of Children’s Reading Clubs, and as organizer of the Annual Spelling Bee Competition, has seen interest peak in 2011.
Clubs are hosted at the North and South Pentecostal Holiness Church, every Saturday from 13:30 hrs. Membership is free and open to all children of Sophia and adjoining areas.
Club contact numbers are 223-8459 (South Sophia) and 219-0764 (North Sophia). The Spelling Bee is the annual event which culminates the routine work of the Reading Clubs.
FOCUS, an NGO, which was formed in 2006, under the name GIST, was registered under the Friendly Societies Act in July 2007. There are currently 20 members in the group with a mission “To enrich lives within the group and communities through developmental projects, sharing of talents, interests and ideas.”
