– stole basket of papaws
Davis Persaud appeared yesterday before Geeta Edmond-Chandan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, on a charge of simple larceny. He was unrepresented.
The court was told by City Constabulary prosecutor James Garnett, that on February 11, last, at the Stabroek Market Wharf, the accused stole a basket of papaws valued $2000 from Savitri Prashad.
The prosecutor explained that on the day in question, Prashad entrusted the accused with the items for him to transport to her stall which is located on the Stabroek Market Wharf. After giving him the items she followed him but stopped to talk to a friend. It was then that the accused took the opportunity to take off with the items.
It was several days after the incident that Prashad observed the accused standing between two buses at a nearby bus park. She grabbed him and held on tightly, and a City constable who was in the vicinity arrested Persaud and took him to the Constabulary outpost where he was charged with the offence.
The accused was described by the prosecutor as a well known felon who had matters similar in nature before a different court. Persaud pleaded guilty.
Magistrate Edmond-Chandan after listening to the facts of the case sentenced him to three months in jail.
But before being whisked away by police officers, the accused begged the court to have mercy on him.
Also appearing before the same Magistrate was Emile Mohamed who was charged with the offence of disposing of waste in an improper manner.
He also pleaded guilty, and like Persaud, was not represented by an attorney.
Magistrate Edmond-Chandan fined him $10,000 with an alternative of twenty days in jail. However after informing the court of his depleted financial status, he was given the jail sentence.
