Students of the final-year degree programme of Social Work at the University of Guyana were in the field for eight (8) weeks carrying out a project as one of the requirements for DSW 314 (Community Practice).
The course objectives were to address various perspectives on the community; to heighten participants’ awareness of the new elements of the community organization; to examine factors affecting group dynamics in the community setting; to explore the community development process and to expose students to practical community activities.
The group of five (5) consisting of Ovida Franklin, Sharon Ramkarran, Shavanne Grimmond, Staceyann Corry and Jennifer Mohabeer, worked with the residents of the Gentle Women’s Home.
The main area of focus of the project was aimed at empowering the residents of the home, mainly by way of education and information. The group spent approximately 4 to 6 hours per week with the ladies on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Some areas that were covered within the eight (8) weeks of intervention were Alzheimer’s disease, Osteoporosis, Hypertension and Nutrition. In one of the sessions, the ladies reminisced and shared their early childhood experiences, and this prompted a request from them to experience Christmas in present day Guyana, in terms of Georgetown and the shopping scene.
The group successfully met with that request and were able to take the ladies on a trip around Georgetown in an effort to boost their Christmas spirit and give them a chance to see what the Christmas shopping looked like.
Upon completion of the intervention, the ladies expressed their gratitude to the group and also noted that it was thoughtful that they had acknowledged senior citizens.
