Focus is on strength & conditioning as preparations heightens
By Franklin Wilson
Upper Demerara based Milerock FC; runner-up in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) National Super League will debut in the Caribbean Football Union Champions Cup when they host Suriname’s Intermoengotapoe on Sunday March 13 at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground.
The predominantly young side, which has on its roster eight junior National players, has already commenced preparations for what is anticipated to be the toughest challenge yet for the Linden side.
Head Coach Brian ‘Joe Boy’ Joseph speaking with Kaieteur Sport said that they will be going all out to make their debut a memorable one. Joseph, who is one of the Assistant Under-20 National Coaches, said that their main reason for participating in the tournament is to allow this younger generation of players to gain experience and exposure.
“We also see this as an opportunity to give hope to small clubs like ours to strive to attain these heights and to show how these little experiences can motivate all involved to go after the things that seems impossible to achieve. We also owe it to our young players who are excelling at the junior National level to give them the exposure and the opportunity to be seen by scouts.”
Keen on ensuring that the team is fully prepared, Joseph disclosed that they began preparatory work on Monday February 7 with FIFA Accredited Fitness Instructor Lindley Langhorne in charge of the strength and conditioning of the players.
Leaving no stones unturned to ensure that the team is a well oiled unit ahead of their opening game on March 13; Joseph disclosed that National Under-20 Head Coach Collie ‘Hitman’ Hercules and National Goalkeeping Coach Andrew Hazel will be joining the Technical staff to strengthen the tactical and technical side of things.
A number of guest players are expected to join the Milerock squad today as training intensifies.
Joseph also disclosed that they are currently in negotiations with some Guyanese players playing on the professional scene to bolster their team; the names of the players will be disclosed when negotiations are complete.
Touching on finances, Joseph informed that they are looking at a budget of Six Million dollars and a few small contributions have been made.
“Our success also hinges on the level of support we receive from corporate Guyana. We have a few meetings scheduled for this Thursday and Friday with a number of entities who we are confident will support us all the way.
Success will also depend on the level of belief we are able to instill into the players. Our focus would be on getting into the last stage but we are taking things slowly one game at a time.”
Some of the young players who will be tasked with guiding Milerock are Clive Nobreiga, Ryan Crandon, Keiron Cameron, Randy Small, Owen Williams, Ron Fiedtkou, Mortimer Ramdehol and Alesta Johnson all junior nationals. Ray Bobb-Semple is another player who Milerock will be looking to for inspiration.
“These guys will be the face of Milerock next season so I expect them to grab this opportunity with both hands,” Joseph noted. The return game will be played in Suriname.
