Kevin Crawford yesterday appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry to answer to a charge of taking an item to the Camp Street penitentiary without lawful authority.
He pleaded not guilty. The accused was represented by defence counsel Gregory Gaskin.
According to police prosecutor, Corporal Venetta Pindar, on February 13, at the Camp Street penitentiary, the accused attempted to smuggle $2,000 to an inmate.
She further added that on the day of the incident, Crawford had visited the prison to deliver food for an inmate. As is mandatory, the food was examined by prison officers for any illegal items and it was for that reason, $2,000 was found stashed in the food. Hence Crawford was told of the offence committed and subsequently taken to the station where he was charged.
Crawford’s lawyer in his bail application told the court that on the day in question his client was given some food by his sister-in-law to take for his brother, Nigel Anthony, who is presently incarcerated at the Camp Street jail. Gaskin went on to explain that the accused had no knowledge that money was concealed in the food.
With that he applied for bail in a reasonable sum citing the fact that the accused is not a flight risk and if granted bail would return for his trial.
Pindar did not object, and Magistrate Beharry granted Crawford bail in the sum of $25,000. The matter will be called again on February 18.
