February is now winding down but already organizers of the Kennard Memorial Turf Club (KMTC) are urging horse owners to start preparing for the Phagwah Day meet slated for Monday March 21 next at the club’s Bush Lot Farm Corentyne facilities.
Seven races are slated for the day’s events and as usual, there will be lots of excitement for turfites and big prize money for the horse owners.
The feature attraction will occur in the ‘B’ and Lower class over a distance of 7 furlongs. The top prize for this race is $500,000 while the second place finisher receives half of that amount. Those placing third and fourth receive $125,000 and $63,000 respectively. Then there is the Open event between the 3 years olds for the top prize of $250,000.
The F & Lower class event also pits a similar first prize while the G and Lower race offers a first prize of $200,000.
Several other exciting races would round off the day’s activities including J, K & L Division, I3 & Lower, H & Lower, and the G & Lower.
Turfites could also look forward to improved action especially since jockeys would be competing under improved track conditions.
Another plus is that a stable of well-bred animals will be on show including animals that are American and locally bred.
Meanwhile, organizers revealed that the event is being conducted under the rules of the Guyana Horse Racing Authority (GHRA) and that these rules would be rigidly enforced.
The registration period end on Saturday March 12 and horse owners can register their animals with Dr Dwight Waldron (645-2848, 220-6557 or 625-0100), Justice Cecil Kennard (226-1399, 225-4818, or 623-7609) or Roopnarine Matadial aka Shine (325-3192) or Ivan Dipnarine (331-0316).
Horse owners are also asked to have their animals examined by the vet by 11:00hrs on race day.
