Suriname authorities say that they have dealt the illegal drug trade in that country a hard blow with the arrest of four persons and seizure of almost 100 kilos of cocaine in the Netherlands.
Investigators also believe that the smugglers used Guyana as one of the alternative routes.
According to news reports from Suriname yesterday, on Sunday last, drug enforcement officials in the Netherlands made the seizure.
On Monday night, the Netherlands and Suriname conducted joint operations, making several arrests.
In Suriname, persons connected to a harbour facility were among those detained in the operations. Authorities, according to the media reports yesterday, said that the seizure of the drugs and the arrests of the men, whose identities were not revealed, is a major dent in the illegal drug smuggling in that country.
It is believed that the gang had developed a network, on a regular basis smuggling narcotics to the Netherlands, using Guyana and other neighbouring countries as routes.
In recent times, the media reports said yesterday, there have been several large seizures of drugs smuggled from Suriname, especially in Portugal, United Kingdom, Pakistan, Bulgaria and the Netherlands. It is estimated that around 600 kilos of cocaine would have been seized within the last few months alone.
It was during a recent bust that Suriname’s police force and Customs authorities were able to make some connections using the new port. It was revealed that investigators, after that last bust, had closely studied which officials were operating at the port at the time that the drugs were believed to have left the facility.
Customs authorities and the police force were said to have been involved.
