Just one day after a nine-year-old boy committed suicide by hanging himself at Gangoo Creek, East Bank Berbice, another person from the area has now committed suicide.
Dead is Doodnauth Ramjattan, 55, a farmer of Plegt Anker, East Bank Berbice. The incident occurred some time between 09:00 hrs and 11:00 hrs yesterday. The man lived in the sparsely populated community with his wife and son.
According to reports, his son left home yesterday around 05:30 hrs for work, while his wife left home shortly before 09:00 hrs to run some errands. It was when his son returned home a little after 11:00 hrs that he saw his father hanging by the neck – suspended by a rope from the rafters.
Ramjattan it is understood was sickly. He had suffered from a stroke and was hypertensive among other ailments. Relatives say he was depressed about his poor health – not being able to do much – and took the opportunity to kill himself while he was alone at home. Police are investigating.
In the meantime, a post mortem examination performed on the body of nine-year-old Richard Mohammed called Rommel, of Gangoo Creek, East Bank Berbice, revealed that he died from self-suspension by a ligature. That was the finding of the autopsy done by Dr Vivekanand Brijmohan at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
Mohammed reportedly committed suicide by hanging him self from a rafter in a fowl pen, on a farm where he lived with his mother, Zazina Mohammed, 24, and stepfather Mohammed Bacchus, 31.
It is understood that the lad and his parents take care of the farm which is owned by Fitz Joseph of Vryheid, West Canje Berbice.
Also on Monday, Police at Reliance were investigating why Ramdehol Ganyah called “Suresh”, 36, a taxi driver of Goed Bananen Land, East Canje, hanged himself in a relative’s house at King Street, Cumberland.
