Eighteen (18) contestants will vie for the title of Chutney Monarch 2011 during the final for the National Mashramani Chutney Competition. The event is scheduled for Saturday, February 19 at the Anna Regina Community Centre Ground, Essequibo from 19:00 hrs.
Among the finalists are reigning monarch, Fiona Singh and former winners Haresh Singh and Rajesh Dubraj. Mahendra Ramkellawan who placed second last year will look to make 2011 his year for wearing the coveted crown.
The 2011 competition will see Soca sensation, Adrian Dutchin, in action as he competes for the first time. Other newcomers are Kawalpatti Couchman, Joel Pharous, Johnny Samaroo, Britney Rajcoomar, Andrew Busjith and Mona Ramsewl. Popular Chutney artistes, Pooran Seeraj, Kamla Rampersaud and Bunty Singh will also endeavour to capture the coveted title. Not to be outdone, so will Dennis Tatpaul, Beesham Jairam, Amir Khan and Savetri Li.
Both Beesham Jairam and Bunty Singh won the Most Promising Artistes prize in the past. They will be looking forward to taking the big prize this year. The contestants will be backed by the Shakti Strings Orchestra, and if the rehearsals are to be used as a gauge, then the judges will have a difficult time in deciding on the 2011 Monarch.
