… ret’d Captain says wrongfully dismissed
Workers attached to the Transport and Harbours Department (T&HD) have not been paid the five per cent retroactive increase for 2010. The announcement of the increase was made in December. The increase had been announced for both T&HD workers and pensioners.
Retired captain of the MV Torani and MV Makouria, Mahashwar Sugrim, is peeved about the total silence of T&HD management and the Ministry of Transport &Hydraulics about the matter. He says that more needs to be done.
He said that the money was to be paid before the holidays last year.
He once represented workers in the Berbice area while he captained the steamers. He telephoned the Ministry of Transport only to be told a very weird story that the money is available but that someone has to make a recommendation for the money.
The T&HD workers do have a union but sources have revealed that the Transport Amalgamated Workers’ Union is now defunct.
Capt. Sugrim added that in 2008, it was announced that all public servants, including those earning below $50,000 would have received a $4,000 top- up those who got above $50,000 would have received five per cent increase. According to Capt. Sugrim, although the $4,000 top- up was paid, other categories of workers never received the five per cent increase.
Capt. Sugrim also spoke about what he believes was his wrongful dismissal after he was suddenly told by T&HD that his services were no longer needed.
He said that the termination of his service seemed weird because there were older persons at the time working at T&HD and that those persons are still employed. He believes that they wanted to get rid of him.
He received a letter dated June 30, 2007 which informed him of the terminated services. “I know definitely I was victimised. They were supposed to send me to the medical board first and then dismiss. But they dismissed me and long after, then sent me to the medical board.
“Then they realized the stupidness that they do then they sent me a letter to go to the medical board.” Capt. Sugrim also said that to date, the Medical Board has not disclosed the results to him.
Meanwhile, Kaieteur News tried to ascertain when the T&HD workers and pensioners would get the salary increase. It also spoke about Capt. Sugrim’s dismissal but ended up with telephone calls to the Ministry of Transport and Hydraulics being transferred from one extension to the next.
No one knew anything about the money nor did anyone wanted to offer a comment.
