Suriname police on Saturday seized some 50 cartons of Bristol cigarettes that were smuggled from Guyana.
Suriname’s Starnieuws has reported that the seizure was made at control point in Coronie.
The cigarettes were stashed in a large black bag.
The apprehended man was heading to Paramaribo in a taxi. Starnieuws said that the arrested man was not known to police and did not speak Dutch. The matter is under further investigation.
Cigarettes smuggling has been troubling Suriname authorities for a while.
Besides cigarettes, meat, medications and fruit are also being smuggled through the backtrack route.
Cigarettes from Guyana are sold cheaper on the blackmarket in Suriname.
