Senior medical officials are refuting an article published in February 9 edition of the Kaieteur News, under the caption ‘Cuban doctor recalled for alleged sexual assault.’
Dr.Renueka Persaud said that the issue pertaining to the alleged sexual assault by the Cuban doctor is all rumour.
Doctor Persaud, who is the Medical Superintendent at the Suddie Public Hospital, said that the Cuban doctor, the mother of the teenager and the teen met at a meeting, recently, to discuss the allegations that sprang from the alleged sexual assault.
She said that they all dubbed the article as misleading. Dr Persaud explained that the Cuban authorities were contemplating sanctioning the doctor and sending him back to Cuba.
The15-year-old, Dr Persaud said, is currently pregnant for her fiancé.
Asked to explain the origin of the allegation and the reason for the subsequent transfer of the Cuban doctor to Wakenaam, Dr Persaud said that it was because of the rumour.
Kaieteur News had reported last Wednesday, that the Cuban doctor who worked at the Oscar Joseph Hospital, was transferred to Wakenaam, because of an alleged sexual assault against two teenagers.
Kaieteur News learnt of the alleged sexual abuse, early January after a doctor and a nurse attached to the Oscar Joseph Hospital at Charity, reported the allegations to a reporter.
AFC councillor, Francis Darchiville, subsequently raised the issue, more recently at Wednesday’s statutory meeting.
At Wednesday’s meeting of the Regional Development Council, Mr. Darchiville, described the doctor’s transfer to ‘Wakenaam as transferring the problem to that island, since there are teenagers there.
Regional Chairman, Alli Baksh, said that the doctor’s misconduct was reported to the Cuban authorities and the Ministry of Health.
Baksh explained that in the case of the 15-year-old, her parents were reluctant to give evidence. She described her relationship with the doctor as just being ‘friends.’
In the other case, the other teenager, Mr, Darchiville reported that she was impregnated by another Cuban doctor who has since returned to his homeland, since his contract has been expired.
