The suicide rate in Berbice continues to climb dramatically with the deaths of two more persons including a nine-year-old who was a victim of child labour.
A nine-year-old lad who was reportedly left alone at home, reportedly hanged himself on Monday in a pen on a fowl farm. He was discovered by his stepfather hanging from the rafter of one of the pens.
Reports reaching Kaieteur News stated that the child, Richard Mohamed, called Rommel, lived alone on a fowl farm with his mother, Zazina Mohamed, 24, and his stepfather Mohamed Bacchus, 31, at Gangoo Creek, East Bank Berbice.
The location is a farming community some 16 miles from New Amsterdam.
It is understood that the lad and his parents take care of the farm which is owned by Fitz Joseph of Vryheid, West Canje Berbice.
It is reported that the lad had finished his chores which included taking care of the fowls on the farm— giving them feed and water.
Some time after his mother sent him to purchase cigarettes, he returned and requested to go to Light Town, some two miles to play with his friend, a 15-year-old, but his mother had refused his request.
He then left and went in the vicinity of the chicken pen. His parents did not see him again.
Subsequent checks revealed him suspended by a Cord hanging from his neck.
It is understood that the lad who is mostly lonely on the sparsely populated community had shown suicidal tendencies before.
During last year when he was just eight years old he had wrapped his head in a plastic bag and was about to suffocate when his parents unwrapped him in the nick of time.
He was enrolled at the Light Town Primary School but would hardly attend.
Police are investigating and statements taken from his parents and other close associates.
A post mortem examination is to be performed shortly.
And later yesterday afternoon taxi driver Suresh reportedly hanged him self at his King Street, Cumberland home after a dispute with his wife.
It was reported that he was locked up and was before the Reliance Magistrate court on Wednesday.
