Feb 15, 2011 Letters
Dear Editor,
Freddie Kissoon’s letter captioned, “It’s Mr. Hergash’s right to believe what he thinks of himself” in the February 13, 2011 edition of Kaieteur News, shows that Mr. Kissoon is unable to handle a “dose of his own medicine”.
Now, let us examine some of what he has written in this latest piece.
Kissoon writes that he has assigned “de-recognition” to one Errol Arthur and then adds “The same goes for Harry Hergash”.
Well, I have never asked for recognition from Freddie Kissoon. Consequently, his “de-recognition”, whatever it means, has no impact on me. Perhaps I should remind him that it is he who, in his January 15, 2011 column (Harry’s areolation and harlequinade), chose to recognise me by writing “Hergash has skipped from Frederick Kissoon to Dr. Cary Fraser”.
Now let us look at these two statements from the letter, “Mr. Hergash thinks he is superior to me… Hergash is possessed of that natural privilege to see himself in those haughty ways”. I recall, it is the same Freddie Kissoon who, in that January 15 column (i.e. just about a month ago), considered me one of those “intriguingly funny, little people, harmless, unobtrusive, but a bit irritating”. And again, in his February 5, 2011 column writes “He (Harry Hergash) takes little punches at some of my pieces but has been stopped in his tracks. I doubt I will ever hear from him again”. I leave the readers to decide who has demonstrated arrogance and a feeling of superiority.
All I can say is that I plead guilty to being one of Kissoon’s “little people” and I am sorry to disappoint him but he can never silence me.
I have always written that Mr. Kissoon, in his attempt to be a contrarian, conveniently forgets what he writes from one day to the next.
He now writes “Mr. Hergash flatters himself and puts himself in the company of powerful men”.
Once again, I should remind him that it is he who has placed me among outstanding people such as eminent journalist Mr. Rickey Singh, Sir Ronald Sanders and others. If Freddie’s memory is failing, despite not being in his “seventies”, I suggest he reviews some of his past columns.
When Kissoon writes “Basically what Hergash is saying is this, “Kissoon I am going to relate to you on my condition and my terms”, is this not exactly what Mr. Kissoon has been doing to others? It seems hypocritical to be complaining now when the “shoe is on the other foot”.
In relation to my involvement with projects in Guyana, I do not believe in blowing my own horn.
I encourage Mr. Kissoon to check with the Office of Resource Mobilization and Planning, previous Vice Chancellors, Mr. Mel Sankies (who acted for a while), Dr. Harold Lutchman and Dr. James Rose of the University of Guyana on my contribution over the last 18 years.
Instead of publicly maligning my alma mater, I have been working quietly to help enhance its reputation and recognise students, irrespective of race, religion, sex, or political affiliation.
He may also wish to contact Castellani House for my role in returning a part of Guyana’s patrimony to the homeland.
Harry Hergash
