Despite the admonition by Minister of Tourism, Manniram Prashad, that minibus operators do not raise fares, many are paying no heed to this and are unofficially, demanding more money.
This is the case for most of the districts exempting the route 44 buses that ply the Georgetown-Mahaica route. Some bus operators claimed that the amount of money they make everyday is lessening.
Gasoline prices have risen to $983 per gallon in Guyana and when teamed with increasing repairs and parts costs, “Ya ain’t making nuttin,” a flashily dressed Parika bus driver said.
“Why we got to wait until it reach a $1,000 a gallon? What’s the difference between $983 and a $1000?”
According to him, a fare increase will not be implemented by the Government until the fuel prices escalate to $1,000 per gallon.
Speaking to a group of young commuters at the Kitty/Cambellville bus park, commuters told Kaieteur News that it was the “regular buses” that were demanding more money and that they didn’t mind paying but they expressed sympathy for those who have tight budgets, mainly the individuals who have responsibilities and family commitments.
Almost all Linden buses have increased their fares by $100, from $800 to $900 (minibus) and $600 to $700 for the safer and bigger buses. At the Parika Park, some conductors are demanding an additional $60 from commuters.
Commuters in all districts except the East Coast have reported these unofficial bus fare increases.
One commuter noted that every time fuel prices go up, fares go up but whenever fuel prices go down, the prices remain unchanged.
