But allowed time for mental preparation says Moore
By Sean Devers
Like the first three days, the final day of the second round Regional Four-Day cricket match between Guyana and the Leeward Islands at Bourda is expected to be washed out today without a ball being bowled due to persistent rain in Georgetown.
Both teams will collect three points today to take Guyana, who travel to face the Windwards in St Vincent from Friday, to seven points while the Leewards will begin their third round game against CCC in Antigua also from Friday, on three points.
Guyana Manager Carl Moore said the lack of any cricket in the middle has been a big disappointment for his team who were confident of increasing their points tally against the Leewards after losing to Jamaica after taking first innings honours in their last game.
Moore, the Manager since 2003, said that while his team was looking forward to being in the middle, Coach Mark Harper and Skipper Assad Fudadin ensured that the players made full use of the time off the field due to the rain.
“We had practice sessions at the indoor facility at the Chetram Singh Centre of Excellence at LBI and the period indoors gave us more time to work on the mental aspects of our game as we prepare to head to St Vincent for this weekend’s clash,” Moore informed.
The Manager said the indoor facility, which was opened last year, is a huge positive especially in a country with lots of rain and has enabled especially the batsmen in the team to get valuable practice ahead of the third round game.
Moore added that the extra bounce on the artificial surface at the indoor facility was also a good thing since the pitch in St Vincent should offer more bounce than those in Guyana.
“Being together as a team with no cricket to play has given us a chance to look at several areas of our game and the Coach has been working hard with the mental aspects of the cricket so I think we should be both physically and mentally ready when we come up against the Windwards,” Moore opined.
The Manager informed that there are no injuries in the squad adding that middle order batsman Leon Johnson, who was replaced by Gajanand Singh for this match due to a finger injury, is now fully fit and practiced with the team.
The selectors are expected to meet today to name the 13-players to travel to St Vincent and Moore said he has had no official update on Test batsman Narsingh Deonarine who is unavailable due to an elbow injury after recovering from a shoulder injury. Deonarine is not expected to be fit for this weekend’s game and the touring party is expected to be announced tomorrow.
The Leewards, who lost to England ‘A’ in their opening game were also looking to rebound in this game and were hoping to leave Guyana earlier than planned for Antigua after Bourda was under water on Friday and the likelihood of play in this game looked remote.
Meanwhile, the third day’s play in the other three second round matches concluded yesterday.
In Barbados, England Lions were 349 -4 in their second innings, trailing Barbados by 122 when play ended yesterday with James Taylor unbeaten three short of his century and Craig Kieswetter not out on 47. Left arm pacer Pedro Collins has so far taken 3-65 for Barbados.
Scores: Barbados 471, England Lions 349-4.
In Grenada, Jamaica were 27-1 in their rain affected match against the Windwards in their 2nd Innings when the day’s play ended with Marlon Samuels unbeaten on 19 and Simon Jackson on six. Nelon Pascal took the only wicket to fall.
Scores: Jamaica 214 & 27-1, Windwards 115.
In Trinidad, the home team were 134-5 in their second innings against CCC heading into today’ final day with Daren Ganga on 39 and Imran Khan 13.
Scores: T&T 164 & 134-5, CCC 131 & 250.
