The Ministry of Health , Georgetown Public Hospital and the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security are organising a programme to assist those students who were affected by the Nanda Kissoon “Medical School” scam.
Kissoon, who goes by numerous aliases, has been embroiled in a nursing school scandal many a times before.
Students have been complaining that their monies have “gone down the drain” since they found out that Kissoon is not accredited.
As a result, the Ministry of Health has initiated a “patient care activity programme” to qualify affected students.
Minister of Health Dr. Leslie Ramsammy disclosed that about 50 students will be benefiting from this initiative.
According to Ramsammy, “only the best will be training these students” therefore, it is left up to them to make the best out of the opportunity. He further stated that, those who “perform well” in the programme will be allowed to move to higher levels. The Minister said that most of the students will be employed at his Ministry and GPHC pending successful completion of the programme.
In addition, the Ministry Human Services and Social Security will give all the students a monthly stipend of $4000.
The Minister said that he is disappointed that persons have, once again, found themselves in the situation at hand even after all the publicity exposing Kissoon for her fraudulent certificate. The Minister said that what is alarming is the fact that most of the students are from the coast and Georgetown.
“They are not from remote areas so as to say that they have no access to the papers or television to defer them from keeping abreast with the news.”
However, “it shows that our youths want to be qualified therefore we are going to give them an opportunity to do so”.
The Minister said that, Kissoon is only “out of order” because she takes money from students to do the training and she is not accredited since “it is good to give people another chance.” Ramsammy said that it is the responsibility of a nation to ensure that persons get to be what they want to be.”
I have been to other countries and see Guyanese who did not make it in Guyana but did in other countries and that is only because they have been given opportunities to redeem themselves.”
The Minister said that he is working on making sure persons can access opportunities to be medical professionals by creating programmes for those who are not “adequately qualified” to be given more chances. He said that the patient care programme is not perfect but “the pursuit of perfection is an excuse to do nothing… so we are going to start and make better as we go along”.
Unfortunately, not all the students will benefit from the activity. The school had about 400 students.
When asked what is going to be done to ensure that Kissoon does not pull a similar scam, the Minister said that Kissoon is very persuasive and there is not much the Ministry alone can do.
Dr. Ramsammy said that persons need to enquire when enrolling to an institution that is non-governmental. He further disclosed that students who were fleeced by the same individual in 2009 complained to him of being fleeced again.
Kissoon had refunded most of the money collected from the students she had fleeced in 2009.
The students were in the dark about their predicament until the Health Minister held a press conference dealing with the bogus nursing school.
According to the students, the woman offered a variety of courses, all of which she taught herself at a city location.
The woman continues to insist that her operation is legitimate.
Dr Ramsammy in a statement some time ago said that “as Minister of Health, I have had to previously intervene to stop unscrupulous persons from operating “training” schools for nursing and other Allied Health Professions.”
