Dear Editor,
It would be rather awkward for me to have to read Mr. Umar Saied’s diatribe on myself, as a businessman in Bartica and as the Regional Chairman of Region Seven and not immediately proffer him an education on the issues.
I have no idea where Mr. Saied got his facts from regarding the election of the Regional Chairman, or the role and function of the Regional Chairman. He obviously needs an education in this regard.
The Regional Chairman’s election to office has absolutely nothing to do with Local Government Elections, or the delay there of. The Regional Chairman is elected from amongst his fellow Regional Councilors at the first sitting of the RDC, as a result of the Regional Elections, which are held simultaneously with the National Elections.
Mr. Saied seems to have an issue with persons who hold political office and are active business persons. Such simplistic and idiotic thinking (against what obtains all over the world) need no attention from me… I am too busy running the affairs of Region Seven and my private business.
I also thought it strange that Mr. Saied, if indeed he was here, chose to ignore the obvious fact that Bartica and indeed the entire Region Seven has in recent years seen an unprecedented increase in the levels of development that compares even to Georgetown. That would be a testimony to the kinds and levels of leadership we have in this region.
The obviously ignorant gentleman also seems blissfully unaware of the fact that the Neighbourhood Democratic Council of Bartica is the entity solely responsible for the collection of garbage in Bartica.
Me Saied (perhaps deliberately) failed to mention the fact that the said (very small) amount of garbage he is anguishing over was indeed picked up by the very truck he mentioned in his letter, and also the fact that he was witnessing what obtains all over Guyana after an event of a gathering of people; garbage to be picked up after the event. Note: the Regional Chairman did not host the event!
Mr. Saied definitely does not know me, or was never at any time enquiring of my where about; the entire Bartica community knows me, they know where to find me and when to find me where.
Finally Mr. Saied, I have absolutely no intention of engaging you in any further debate on your misinformation, gross ignorance and downright disrespect for my person and my office. Suffice it to say that some of your writings about me and my office are bordering on being libelous.
Holbert Knights,
Regional Chairman, Region Seven
