Dear Editor,
I refer Harry Hergash of the Guyana-Canada Forum to a letter I penned last month in this newspaper in response to a gentleman that goes by the name of Errol Arthur in Washington D.C. My point to Arthur is that I reserve and possess the fundamental right as a person to determine who I should show respect to.
This of course precludes any infringement on the very rights of the person to whom I assign de-recognition. I do not have any respect for the Errol Arthurs of this world and it is my right to make that opinion once I do so in temperate language and without malicious intent.
The same goes for Harry Hergash. Mr. Hergash thinks he is superior to me as a person. That is his right to believe in what he thinks of himself. Twice I put the question to Hergash that instead of writing about others’ depiction of Mr. Jagdeo as autocratic he should pen his own judgment. I repeat; twice I put that option to him.
He refused to respond. Then last week, in a superior tone, Mr. Hergash let me know that he would only answer the question if I bow to him and explain a statement I once made in one of my columns a long time ago. Basically what Hergash is saying is this; “Kissoon I am only going to relate to you on my condition and my terms.” Well Hergash is possessed of that natural privilege to see himself in those haughty ways.
I am not going to play any game Hergash wants me to play with him and for two fundamental reasons – he is not a superior human that can shape the way I relate to him and secondly, I don’t have that respect for him that would compel me to do what he would like me to do.
Harry Hergash is in his seventies. He left Guyana at the end of the sixties and has taken up Canadian citizenship. I have been told that he never returned to Guyana and will never remigrate to his land of birth. As far as I know Mr. Hergash is not involved in any social or humanitarian project that would benefit the country in which I live and hope to die in. Against this background, I have absolutely no interest in how Mr. Hergash sees Jagdeo, whether in a positive light or as a dictator.
From the writings of Mr. Hergash, it seems that he cannot escape from the memories of the race riots of the sixties that he bore witness to and for that reason chooses to support the PPP.
I have not even the slightest interest in converting Hergash or trying to get him to see reason.
Those older folks on both sides of the divide from the sixties who experienced the traumas of that period have allowed their psyches to be scarred.
Mr. Hergash complained that I have challenged two persons in Guyana and now he is challenging me and I should take it up.
Mr. Hergash flatters himself and puts himself in the company of powerful men. He is under illusions. He has no power.
The two gentlemen I asked for a political/intellectual rivalry with are people who, on demitting office, would mean greater democracy for Guyana. I called on Mr. Jagdeo to resign if I can prove I have published research. If I cannot, I will quit UG and leave my Kaieteur News column.
I asked the Commissioner of Police to prove that the seizure of Mr. Maniram’s truck was backed by law.
If he did that, I would do what I promised in the situation with the President.
If he could not, he must demit office. I have no intention of putting a challenge to Hergash or accepting one from him. What is involved? Absolutely nothing
