Unofficial champs Amelia’s Ward suffer first defeat with one game in hand

Unofficial Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA) Senior League champions Amelia’s Ward United suffered their first defeat following six wins on the trot, their second loss overall but are still assured lifting the championship trophy.
They lost by the lone goal of that encounter to a determined Silver Shattas at the Christianburg Community Center Ground.
Romell Matthews’ 44th minute needle was enough to hand Silver Shattas the win, their third in eight matches. The Ward team tried on many occasions to draw level but robust defending by the Shattas who played with all eleven players behind the half line, nullified Amelia’s Ward attempts.
The battle is now on for the remaining positions. Winners Connection have exhausted all their games following wins against Vasco and Blueberry Hill United by respective 1 – 0 and 2 – 1 margins.
Captain of Winners Connection Rawle ‘Boney’ Gittens is now the leading goal scorer with 11 moving one ahead of Amelia’s Ward United Travis Waterton, the latter having one more game to play.
Among the sponsors of the league are Guyana Geology & Mines Commission, Wayne Ebba, Mark Grimmond, Shawn Hopkinson, Bonnie Davis, Horace James of the Linmine Secretariat, Andrew McBean of NCN Linden and Gorden Gumbs of the Linden Hospital Complex.
