Read before you jump at me. This is not a commentary on sports. I do not follow the world of sports with the same attention I pay to international affairs, society, culture and human affairs matters.
This article here is about particularity what I have observed in the administration of sports. From the eighties onwards, I have read about attorney, K. Juman-Yassin being the head of the Olympic Association.
Surely he must have been in that office going on to twenty five years (I stand corrected).
My curiosity is how does he continue in office? I suppose it is by election. If it is, then how often are the elections?
And does he have competitors? I admit I am not acquainted with these procedures and they may have been publicized over the past two decades. If they have, I will ask my colleagues at Kaieteur News to guide me. If they have not, then can we have some explanation?
Secondly, there is the situation with Mr. Ivor O’Brien. On reading his brief biography in yesterday’s KN, It is simply amazing how long this gentleman has been an official with the same Guyana Olympic Association. It appears that Mr. O’Brien is going on to thirty five years in that organization. I ask the same questions that I posed earlier to Mr. Juman-Yassin.
Is it that no one over the past thirty years has shown any interest in these positions? I would like to ask these two gentlemen when they plan to give over to others.
And by this I am not referring to age. In my philosophy there is no place for age. If an eighty year old person replaces Mubarak in Egypt, I would not have a problem with that. My point is that thirty two years were too long for Mubarak.
I welcome the passing of the baton by Mr. Chetram Singh of the Guyana Cricket Board. When you are stuck in an occupation for so long, I believe vision in leadership goes. That is why I support two term restriction for leaders of government.
I do not think a Cabinet Minister should serve beyond twelve years. It is complete madness for PPP leaders Rohee, Teixeira, and Luncheon to be Cabinet members for nineteen years. It would be an insult to human decency if the PPP wins the election and these people continue to be in the Cabinet.
