The Table Tennis coaching programme initiated by the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) in collaboration with the Steering Committee of the Berbice Sub Association will continue from today at the New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary School (NAMS) beginning at 10:00 hrs.
Today’s session, which is the second in a series of such sessions that is being held in Berbice, will be conducted by coaches Ray ‘Copter ‘Anderson and Andrew Daley. The first session which was held last Saturday at the same venue was conducted by Anderson and former national champion and now coach Colin France. 29 persons participated in that session. The sessions are mostly for school children, but adults are welcome to attend.
The training and coaching sessions are all part of the GTTA aim to spread the game to all parts of the country. It is being held in an effort to revitalize the game in the ancient county and to prepare the players for the Berbice open championship which is slated for Wednesday February 16 at the Port Mourant Training Centre.
Berbice with its rich history in the game has taken the initiative and is making full use of the GTTA plans.
Apart from the two national coaches, Berbician base former women’s champion Desiree Lancaster along with Floyd Conway and Brentnol Richards, Gibran Hussein and former junior Caribbean doubles champion Petal Bennett are expected to assist.
Meanwhile, plans for Berbice open Pre Mashramani tournament are moving full stream ahead. The tournament which is open to only Berbicians and will be played in three categories; U-13, U-18 and Open for both males and females, has seen over 70 entries so far.
President of the GTTA Commissioner of police Henry Green has throwing his full weight behind the expansion and developmental programme. Members of the steering committee in Berbice made an inspection of the Port Mourant venue and were impressed with how preparations are going.
The Berbice steering committee is headed by Floyd Conway and includes Gibran Hussein, Desiree Lancaster, Ian Amsterdam, Jairam Ramlakhan, Brentnol Richards, and Levan Buchey. Businessman and former Mayor Errol Alphonso is assisting in an Advisory capacity and Samuel Whyte Public Relations.
The commissioner of Police Henry Green is expected to be at the launching of the Berbice tournament. Outstanding performers will be selected to participate in the Mashramani tournament later in the month in Georgetown.
