Mark Harper’s appointment was based on merit

President of the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) Alfred Mentore says that the Queenstown Club celebrates the appointment of DCC member and former Guyana batsman Mark Harper as National Coach.
Mentore, a former Guyana under-19 batsman feels that Harper’s appointment was based on merit and probably one of the better decisions for cricket in Guyana at this time.
“Over the years Mark has served the game well and contributed to its development in Guyana. We note that this is not his first appointment to the top coaching job; his last tenure was cut short because of international commitments” Mentore said
The 38-year-old Mentore said the controversy that surrounded his nomination and subsequent appointment was regrettable.
“His nomination was surprisingly not supported by Mr. Bissoon Singh at the GCB executive meeting. He eventually had a change of heart and voted to confirm the said appointment. This kind of political and other illogical actions is only bent on creating controversy and uncertainty rather than putting forward sensible solutions to further develop the game we all love” Mentore, a former President of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) added.
Mentore said that not withstanding the controversy and the loss to Jamaica in his first match back after Guyana had taken first innings points, DCC wished him all the success in the games to come.
Rain has already severely affected Guyana’s second-round game at Bourda against the Leeward Islands, the last team they have beaten in a Regional First-Class game.
Yesterday’s opening day’s play was washed out and no play is expected today due to water logged condition of the ground but Harper is ensuring his team remains focused on the job with training and indoor net sessions yesterday and today.
