Shane Simon, of Prem Nagar Street, East Meten-meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara, appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court charged with possession of gun and ammunition without being a licenced holder.
The accused, who is being represented by defense counsel Vic Puran in association with his daughter Miskha Puran, pleaded not guilty.
According to police prosecutor, Corporal Venetta Pindar, on February 8, at Greenwich Park, East Bank Essequibo, Simon was in possession of a gun and matching ammunition.
The prosecutor added that on the day in question, at approximately 14:30 hrs, police ranks were patrolling the Greenwich Park area when they observed the accused acting suspiciously.
He was stopped and a search carried on the motor car in which he was. That search unearthed a .32mm pistol and one live round stashed under the driver seat of the car. He was arrested, cautioned and taken to the station where he was charged.
Miskha Puran in her bail application told the court that her client is 35-year-old and is gainfully employed as a taxi driver. She explained that on the day of the incident, the accused was transporting passengers in his car, thus making it possible that the persons could have placed the articles in the car.
Vic Puran added that after his client had dropped off some of his passengers at Parika, there were still passengers in the car and if the court wishes those persons can give an account of who were responsible for leaving the items in the vehicle.
He then went on to request for bail to set in a reasonable sum for his client.
The Magistrate allowed Simon bail in the sum of $200,000 on each on the charges. The matter was made returnable on February 15. Also appearing before the same Magistrate to answer to the charge of break and enter was Junior Luther of Lot 35 Pike Street, Kitty Georgetown.
The accused who was unrepresented declared his innocence on the charge instituted against him.
Based on police reports, on February 8, in Georgetown, the accused allegedly broke into the dwelling house of Joseph Watson and stole several articles.
On the day of the incident, around 17:00 hrs, Watson secured his home and went out.
It was upon his return that he observed his western side window was broken. As he ventured to the upper flat of his premises he discovered that two pairs of footwear, two wristwatches and a cellular phone were missing.
Hence the matter was reported and the police were able to apprehend the suspect after intense investigation. Following his arrest, the accused admitted to the offence.
As the Magistrate informed him that he would be remanded, the court was told that an arrest warrant was issued for the said accused on a matter similar in nature.
The matter will be called again on February 14.
With that, he was whisked away to attend the other case.
