Millions of dollars in both cash and groceries were lost in a fire that completely gutted the building that housed the Kaskia Ice Cream Parlour, at Anna Regina, early yesterday morning.
Converging on the scene, moments after the fire occurred, this newspaper was told by onlookers who had already converged on the scene, that although the fire service responded promptly, the fire raged for almost one hour, and before fire workers were able to contain the fire to the single building.
Businessman 36-year-old, Rohan Sarjoo, formerly of Alexander Village, Georgetown, said that he was asleep in the upper flat of the building, when he awaken by the voice of one of his workers.
Sarjoo said he heard, “Boss come, come. Look all these lights, including the television are dimming.”
The person who sounded the alarm Kitty and another worker, Dereck, was at the time sitting in the living room viewing television. Sarjoo said that he immediately got up and placed a call to the Fire Station which is located, almost 300 meters away.
Sarjoo who opened up his business last year November and operates a Cambio and Ice Cream Parlour, said that the fire started in the bottom flat of the two-storey building.
He said that when he ventured downstairs the entire bottom flat was engulfed in thick smoke. He had to hurriedly open two adjoining steps to make entrance for the workers of the fire department.
“This fire boss [Kirkland Harry] was the man that quickly scaled the top of the building and eventually was able to contain the fire to the gutted building.”
“Were it not for Harry’s expertise the adjoining building that housed a gas station would have been severely burnt too.”
Sarjoo who has since estimated his losses at millions of dollars, said that he was not able to salvage his household electrical appliances, groceries, monies and clothes, all of which he recently added to his business collection.
The businessman who is a dealer of all Sterling products and Ice-cream, noted although his loss, affect him personally, ten of his staff is presently been affected also.
Last year, Sarjoo established the Kaskia Ice-Cream Parlour on the Essequibo Coast. The proprietor of the gutted building, Ivan Narain, who resides with his family in Canada, has since been alerted about the fire. This newspaper understands that Narain is making preparation to return to Guyana.
When asked what may have caused the fire, Harry was not able to say what caused the fire, but according to speculations it may have been a result of an electrical fault.
Guyana Power and Light had to be summoned to disconnect power to the area.
