AGM set for February 27
Hyped as the leading candidate to replace incumbent President Dr. Maxine Parris-Aaron at the helm of the Guyana Netball Association (GNA), Attorney-at-Law Kim Kyte-John on Wednesday presented to Kaieteur Sport some of her thoughts on how the sport could make the kind of impact that it has in the rest of the Caribbean.
A former Magistrate, who has now returned to private practice, Kyte-John is widely tipped to become the next President of the GNA and she disclosed to this newspaper that among her priorities would be to strengthen the programme in schools and to get more persons aware of the sport.
“We need to make the sport more accessible and popular in schools, while I also believe that getting more persons involved at various levels could assist in widening the network at every stratum. There is also the possibility of attracting potential sponsors and competent individuals with the ability and resource to supply the injection that the sport needs right now,” Kyte-John stated.
She said that because of her profession, she is privy to pertinent information related to the social ills that are affecting the society currently, giving as examples teenage pregnancy, gang violence and juvenile delinquency which according to her could be eliminated through the implementation of a robust sport policy.
“There is a lot of gang violence in schools and I feel that if attempts are made to resuscitate a proper sports programme in the curriculum, it could provide another avenue for them to channel their energies constructively,” she felt.
Kyte-John said that if elected to the office she will be going in with limited knowledge of the sport, but has been having consistent engagements with the outgoing President and other persons who’re intimately involved in the sport presently.
“I will rely on those individuals who’ve pledged their support for me to guide me through the initial phase, while my professional background will also be an asset, especially in terms of instilling discipline and all other related aspects for the smooth functioning of the Association,” Kyte-John revealed.
She said marketing of the sport will also be essential since in an environment which is highly competitive in terms of procuring sponsorship, the entity will have to attract persons with the ability to sell the sport in addition to the critical support of the media.
Kyte-John informed that if given the opportunity to serve she will place specific emphasis on discipline in sport which she believes could be applied in other areas of life.
She also spoke of the New Opportunity Corp, as institution she was informed possesses very good players.
“This institution according to what I was told could be a fertile ground to take the sport as well so that they could generate life skills and return to society as productive individuals and lead good lives.”
The Attorney-at-law feels that once the sport is properly organised, it could begin to enjoy the support of the corporate and legal communities which she intends to approach.
“I will be calling on the doors of members of my fraternity not only for their money, but to have them participate as well, while I am also prepared to approach the business sector with a comprehensive plan to assist in the development of the sport,” she mentioned.
Kyte-John acknowledged the support of Dr. Parris-Aaron, who she said was always amenable and someone who has done a great job for the sport during her tenure.
“She told me that she was always looking for someone with the drive and passion to takeover and I’m hoping that if elected I could fulfil that wish,” Kyte-John said.
The GNA Annual General Meeting will be held on February 27, at a venue that will be disclosed shortly.
